Disco is Dead

Disco spent a lot of time promoting themselves as a Toast killer — "Having Toast For Breakfast" was their famous tag line. They’ve since changed it to “Full featured disc burning for real people”, but even that’s being ambitious. When it comes to burning discs, Toast has one big advantage: it works.

Today I had a couple of .bin disc images I needed to burn to CD, so what better app to use than Disco? After all, I’m a real person.

Expecting it to be as easy to use as they claim, I fired up Disco and dragged my .bin file to Disco. There weren’t any warnings or errors, so I clicked ‘Burn’ and waited patiently. Perfect! Except that after mounting the CD I discovered it contains exactly one file — the .bin file.

So maybe it’s not that easy to use. I put my drink on my new coaster and proceeded to read the documentation. Here I discovered my error:

“To burn a disc based on .BIN/.CUE files simply drag both files to Disco, and Disco will automatically create a correctly formatted disc for you.”

Not as intuitive as it could be, but fair enough. After inserting blank CD number two I made sure to drag both the .bin and .cue file to Disco. Once again no warnings or errors, so I clicked ‘Burn” and waited patiently. My newly minted CD now contained exactly two files — the .bin and .cue file.

This is Automatic?

Thinking perhaps my .bin files were corrupt, I decided to try them in Toast. I followed the friendly instruction to “Drag a .cue file into this area” and clicked the big red “Record Disc” button. A few minutes later I was rewarded with a proper copy of my CD. Quick and simple. What more could I ask for, Smoke?
