The Polar Express is being both praised and panned for its use of Performance Capture technology (also known as Motion Capture.)
The main complaint seems to be that characters’ almost-but-not-quite-real look is rather unsettling. This phenomenon is known as the uncanny valley, and is the reason why realistic graphics make humans look creepy.
